A few weeks ago one of our incredible lifeguards left us for two weeks to compete in the U19 Women’s World Lacrosse Championships in Peterborough, Ontario. Ryan represented Team Israel in the competition, but it was what her and her teammates did off the field that truly stood out.
After playing Team Kenya in the torrential rain and winning 13-4, some members of team Israel noticed that Team Kenya were slipping and falling because they didn’t have cleats, and felt they had to do something. “We felt as if these girls deserved the same opportunities as we did both on and off the field, and decided to take action.”
The team all pitched in to get the girls from Kenya brand new cleats from a local sports shop. The difference it made was noticeable immediately, when Team Israel played Team Kenya in a rematch and won by just one goal. Both teams came together afterward to celebrate, as Ryan put it “it was just really heartwarming to make a difference in these girls lives, put a smile on their face, and make lasting friendships that span over continents – we still whatsapp!”
In the mornings at Camp Pinebrook we have a very special tradition that we do every day called Boker Tov! At Boker Tov we all gather as a camp to kick off the day with some of our fun camp songs! Every day, campers are lead in “Am I Awake” and “The Shema” by our amazing song leader Roi! They also sing our ‘Boker Tov’ song, wishing everyone a good morning in Hebrew and welcoming them to camp. Being from Israel, Roi also takes this time to teach all of camp one word of Hebrew each day. Today’s word was ‘kef’ which means fun!
Boker Tov is one of the few times during the day that we get to gather as an entire camp. It’s a great bonding experience for the campers and reinforces one of our core values, community. It’s a chance for campers to spend time with their friends from other bunks and show off their Camp Pinebrook spirit!
Today was Wacky Wednesday at Camp Pinebrook and the theme of the week was music! Campers and staff came to camp wearing their favorite band stickers ranging from Kiss to One Direction!
On Wacky Wednesday we all show our camp spirit by dressing up to that weeks theme. The campers also sit with whoever they want at lunch, eating with friends from other groups, siblings, and different counselors.
Wacky Wednesday is something the campers look forward to every week, and it really bring the camp together as a community. Most Wednesdays, we’re also joined by Cantor Schloss for a song session after lunch.
